Last Days at Wolfjaw (Tin House)

Do not go outside. Glimpses of marsh look pleasant. The water clean like metal. Ripe foliage two-feet-long, fleshy. But swaths of black flies and doughy maggots cover everything. The terrible smell cuts your throat.

They were all Katrinas to me. The storm. My wife. Those Chihuahuas running like mad all over town. Wrecking balls and masters of Irish goodbyes. Everybody left for Connecticut or Texas, but Rogey sat tight. Friends since before elementary school. Way back. Everything was built to last then. Radios. Lighters. Relationships.

Dracula Mountain (CutBank)

They called it Dracula Mountain. The stony peak—rock like metal in the hard sun—cresting clouds. The crows cawing from the shadows, and that smell of ammonia choking every sense.

American Metal (Baltimore Review)

I never read much before, but here it kills time. Band of Brothers. Catch-22. The Thin Red Line. Most everybody watches movies. I can't take the violence on TV, but I’m excited to fire at something other than paper targets. Maybe everybody is, but no one’s saying much. Guess I'm looking for insight into somebody else's experience. Just being away from home, I guess, is like every other deployment. So I lie in wait, and I read until the shooting starts.
